Top tips on travel insurance
1. Do not rely on your credit card accident cover, home insurance, EHIC or private health cover as these are often not sufficient to cover emergencies abroad, which can be extremely expensive unless you are adequately insured.
2. Purchase travel insurance at the same time you book your flight or holiday, so that you have instant cover in case you need to cancel because of redundancy, family bereavement or illness.
3. Consider annual multi-trip insurance if you make several trips a year – you’ll save time and money.
4. Upgrade your policy if you need extra cover for activities that are commonly excluded from standard policies e.g. winter sports or jet skiing.
5. Ensure you disclose any pre-existing medical conditions - failure to do so will result in the risk of invalidating your policy and not being covered. Special cover can be provided.
Know before you go - useful advice
It's important to know how the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) can and cannot help you when you're abroad:
Before you travel, visit www.fco.gov.uk/travel to get the latest travel advice about your destination, and make a note of the number of the nearest British Embassy or Consulate to where you are staying, so you can ask for help if you need it.
